If you purchase beef for your family, check out this news story and make sure your beef has not been recalled.
Don't worry, I'll wait...All set? Good.
Now, go over here and check out this interesting article on grass-fed beef...I'd say I'll wait again, but I know you're not clicking on the second link. So instead let me explain...no time to explain, let me sum up:
All beef has E. coli bacteria in it because ALL meat has the bacteria in it. However, "grass-fed beef naturally contains less of the bad E. coli bacteria," you know bad E. coli. He's the one who gives you stomach cramps, makes you vomit and causes *ahem* soupy poop. THAT bad E. coli. bacteria.
So, why is grass-fed beef safer?
Because if your cow isn't eating grass, it is eating corn and other grains which the cow cannot digest properly. This raises the levels of bad E. coli in its system. But never fear, the mass producers of beef solved this problem by feeding your beef tons of antibiotics and hormones to try and kill off some of the E. coli.
But this bad E. coli is in the manure, which the cows are knee-deep in. Don't worry again though. This problem was also solved! They rinse all your beef with ammonia before they ship it to you. You know ammonia, the stuff janitors use to wash toilets, clean floors...YUM!
Now you know why the vague "natural flavorings" are on your food labels.
And you know, most of the time this process works. MOST of the time. But sometimes it doesn't. And a lot of people get sick because more than 80% of all the ground beef in the U.S. goes through the above process.
Humor me for a minute longer please...grass-fed beef.
Since cows can digest grass, there is no build-up of the bad E. coli in their system. So there is no need to feed them antibiotics, no mass quantities of bad E. coli in the manure, no need to treat the beef with ammonia, no need to add "natural flavor" to the final product.
Grass-fed beef is available at most supermarkets now and if not a total grass diet, there is grass finished beef which means they fed your cow corn which makes them nice and fat (and delicious) and then they move over to grass before they are slaughtered...this process of grass finishing naturally kills all the bad E. coli in their system. So still a much healthier and safer alternative to traditional ground beef.
It makes sense to me. How about you and your family?
