On an individual level Bittman reports, “Americans are downing close to 200 pounds of meat, poultry and fish per capita per year (dairy and eggs are separate, and hardly insignificant), an increase of 50 pounds per person from 50 years ago. We each consume something like 110 grams of protein a day, about twice the federal government’s recommended allowance; of that, about 75 grams come from animal protein.”
Experiment #1: Meatless Mondays
Reduce personal meat consumption by 1/7th through changing our diets for a single day per week. On Mondays, we will enjoy a diet of vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, dairy and grains. [Experiment #1B (or Phase II) will be to get our meat consumption down to levels on par with the 1950s, which means roughly two meatless days a week. Other phases to come as we test our hypothesis.]
Note, we currently eat meat with almost every meal (chicken with veggies, shrimp and rice, turkey sandwiches), this will be a test more of our creativity to not center the meal around a star protein.
Hypothesis: If a person eats a vegetarian diet at least 1 day a week, then there will be a beneficial impact on the individual's physical and economical health.
Materials: Vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, dairy and grains.
Data Recording:
Recipes, including calorie counts--we're getting married in October, so we're watching the waist line (these links will take you to the recipes we are using; we'll have them up by the end of today)
Weight--his and hers (I won't lie as much as I want to)
Costs--grocery bills, cost per meal, cost per serving
Analysis: To be updated after two weeks of implementing Meatless Mondays.
Here we go...
